Healthy Lifestyle Habits
These days, with life moving so quickly it is sometimes easy to forget about creating healthy habits. In order to develop healthy habits, it is important to start small, and implement these habits over time in order to sustain a good routine that benefits your mental heallth and wellbeing.
What are Healthy Habits?
A habit is something that you do routinely, often without even knowing it. Some habits are good and beneficial, while some are unwanted or may even be considered ‘bad’ or unhealthy.
Some good habits can include:
- Getting enough sleep
- Having work-life balance
- Time management
- Setting Healthy Relationship Boundaries
- Practicing Mindfulness and relaxation
- Eating healthy
For healthy habits to start, it is important to take small steps and set small, achievable goals.
Eating Healthier
Eating healthier can sometimes feel like an overwhelming habit to overcome. One small change that might be easy to make is to make sure you eat breakfast. It doesn’t have to be a ‘Big Breakfast’, you could even start building this habit with a granola bar or a piece of fruit, but it is a good habit to start with. Eating breakfast is important for many reasons, it jumpstarts your metabolism and helps prevent overeating during the day.
Get Moving
Establishing healthy habits is not just about eating well, it is also about moving your body. Not everyone has time to go to the gym every single day, and while going to the gym is certainly a great way to get fit and healthy there are also other day-to-day activities you can do to supplement your workouts. Use the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator, do housework at a brisk pace to get your heart rate going or even go for a walk during your lunch break.
Get a Good Night’s Sleep
When it comes to creating good sleep habits, consistency is key. Go to bed at around the same time every night and get up around the same time every morning, even on the weekends. Make sure your room is quiet, dark and a comfortable temperature. Another great tip is to avoid doing work in your bed. It can be tempting to answer emails or zoom calls from the comfort of your bed but it can prevent you from fully relaxing when it is time to go to sleep.
Practice Mindfulness
Being mindful is not just about meditation, it is also about being present in your day-today life. Ways you can practice mindfulness include spending time off social media, keeping a gratitude journal, being aware of how you feel both physically and emotionally and turning off your gadgets such as your TV or Spotify to enjoy some quiet time.
Learn Something New
New skills keep your brain healthy and are great for your mental health. Take an online class, watch some DIY Youtube videos or even learn to dance or learn a new language. Reading can also be an easy and effective way to learn new things. One book that we recommend is Atomic Habits, which does a deep dive into how to creat and maintain healthy habits.
Go Offline and Outdoors
Spending time outside can be very theraputic but sometimes it can be difficult to find the motivation to spend time outside, especially if you work from home. Some ways to spend more time outside incldude having your coffee breaks outdoors, walking to and from the shops or you could adopt an outdoor hobby such as rollerskating or bike riding.
